Over 25 years ago, four Smith-Cotton alumni met at Kelly’s after work one afternoon and never imagined their get-togethers would still be going strong today. Joe White (Class of ’62), Dave Dotson (Class of ’59), Jim Swope (Class of ’60), and Cecil Ravenscraft (Class of ’60) met at Kelly’s in October 1990 for the first time and agreed to meet again in a few months. They promised each other they would each invite a friend who was also an S-C graduate and the tradition of meeting twice a year on the first Wednesday of April and October at 5:05 p.m. began. (Dave worked close by and it took him about five minutes to get there!)
Although Jim and Cecil are deceased, those who have attended several Kelly’s reunions know how proud they both would be of the size and longevity of the reunions. A banner, provided by Kelly’s, welcoming Smith-Cotton Alumni is proudly hung before each reunion. In the beginning, the get-togethers were attended mostly by the men. According to Dave, that wasn’t done on purpose; it just happened that way. In April 1991, that all changed when Bette Sue Edde Viterna (Class of ’61) attended her first Kelly’s Reunion.
The reunion typically lasts a couple of hours with lots of reminiscing and laughter. Mark your calendar now for the next Smith-Cotton Reunion at Kelly’s Inn on Westport in Kansas City--the first Wednesday of April and October at 5:05 p.m.
