Sunny skies, friends, and a football win create the perfect Homecoming weekend
It was a sunny and warm afternoon on September 29, 2017, as the Smith-Cotton Homecoming parade made its way through downtown Sedalia. Smith-Cotton sports teams, activities and clubs, along with the elementary schools, middle school, junior high school and sports teams, and class reunions participated in the parade for a total of 50 entries.
Earlier that morning the 2017 Distinguished Alumni Award had been presented to SC graduate Mary McClure with the class of 2018 in attendance. Ms. McClure addressed the class and visitors on how being back in Sedalia brought her such great memories. Such as the last time she was in a homecoming parade she was inside a big cardboard box painted like an Archives yearbook in an attempt to sell more yearbooks, how the Class of 1972 won the “best homecoming float” award every year, and how on reflecting about growing up in Sedalia she realized what a rare gift it was to have strong women role models who lived on through the name of the town, the high school, and the stadium.
Later in the evening the Smith-Cotton Tigers defeated the Clinton Cardinals 30 to 14. The football Tigers finished the regular season 9-0 earning them the West Central Conference football title for the second time in three years and the No. 1 seed entering district play. The Foundation hosted a tailgate party in the high school gym and served hamburgers and hot dogs grilled by the team of school board members David Wolf and Kennie Coffelt and Tiger parents and supporters Todd Holman and Tom Munson.
Saturday morning the Foundation held a pancake breakfast at Smith-Cotton Junior High. While future alumni from the elementary schools performed in the cafeteria, vocal students from the junior high presented a concert on the stage of the original high school. Alumni from class reunions wandered the halls of their Smith-Cotton visiting and laughing as they recalled past memories. Alumni came from out of state and the 1996-1997 AFS student Lone Flyvholm from Denmark returned to Sedalia for the 1997 class reunion.
Two annual luncheons and six class reunions—1947, 1956, 1977, 1982, 1987, 1992, 1997, and 2007—were held over Homecoming weekend. The date has already been set for Homecoming 2018. The Smith-Cotton Tiger football team will face Rock Bridge on Friday, October 5, 2018.
